The restaurant was previously in Dallas’ West Village for 20 years.

Dallas-born restaurant Mi Cocina has sassy, sleek style in its new home on McKinney Avenue in Uptown Dallas, replacing a former Del Frisco’s Grille.

For 20 years, the restaurant was previously in West Village, less than a mile north on McKinney Avenue. It closed in March 2022 and the company invested in a bigger restaurant space nearby, where crews have built two stories of dining and drinking, a 40-person private dining area and a new bar called Seis Segundos.

“It was a little tough to leave someplace you’ve been for 20 years. But it’s exciting,” says CEO Edgar Guevara.

“It’s like moving from the house you grew up in to a bigger house.”

The restaurant opens Thursday, May 19, 2022.

It has the largest patio among the company’s 22 Mi Cocinas. Part of the patio will be covered and can be enclosed, heated and cooled during less-than-temperate months in Texas.

The star of this new Mi Cocina is Seis Segundos, the second-story bar with a separate menu. Options include two quesos, one with chorizo, one with picadillo tres chiles and corn; nachos; quesadillas; and teeny hard-shell tacos.

Seis Segundos also serves the double cheeseburger made famous at Taco Diner — which has but one remaining restaurant, in Lake Highlands; the rest closed. The addition of a burger, at a Mexican restaurant no less, is surely a delight for fans keeping track. (The burger is also available at La Parada, the outdoor window on the back side of the newish Mi Cocina in Klyde Warren Park.)

Mi Cocina’s main dining room, on the first floor, will serve the regular Mi Cocina menu: taco salad, sunset enchiladas, tilapia tacos, fajitas and the like.

On all levels, the restaurant’s famous Mambo Taxi, which is a frozen margarita-sangria swirl, will be served from its bars. The Mambo is mixed with Hornitos tequila at the bar upstairs.

The two-story room, with its generous floor plan and variety of art, gives off the feeling that dinner could feel different in any corner: in the 40-person private dining area at the top of the stairs, on the curvy bench on the upstairs patio, sitting at the Seis Segundos bar, or at a more traditional table downstairs.

The project took a few months longer than Guevara had intended. “But you’ve got to do it right,” he says. He signed a lease to stay at least 20 years.

Mi Cocina in Uptown is at 3232 McKinney Ave., Dallas. It opens May 19, 2022.
