Each year, the Cowan Center™ invites primary and secondary educators and also the general public to consider and explore the essential aims of humanities education and to hear guest speakers present their work for discussion. This semester, Institute Fellow Dr. Diana Senechal will make a special appearance, traveling to Dallas from Szolnok, Hungary, and bringing two of her colleagues from the Varga Katalin Secondary School, the poet and editor Gyula Jenei and the critic Marianna Fekete, for a two-day program during which they will make presentations about their work together in Hungary and invite audience members to participate.
Session 1
October 28, 6:30 – 8:00pm, Reception 6:00pm
A poetry reading and discussion, during which Mr. Jenei will read his poetry in Hungarian, Dr. Senechal will read her translations, and Ms. Fekete will join them in a panel discussion followed by audience Q&A.
Session 2
October 29, 6:30 – 8:00pm, Reception 6:00pm
A lecture by Ms. Fekete and Dr. Senechal on the Hungarian haiku poetry of Béla Markó, followed by a discussion that will include the audience and concluding with a “Hungarian haiku workshop” in which audience members will participate.
