Construction has kicked off on an Uptown Dallas apartment community that took years to win approvals.

Developer Lincoln Property Co. is building its Lincoln Katy Trail rental project on Carlisle Street just east of Turtle Creek. The more than 300-unit apartment development will replace 115 aging condominiums on the site between Hall and Bowen streets.

Demolition crews are currently knocking down the old buildings.

The developers gained zoning for the project last year after a long and sometimes bitter fight with nearby property owners and community groups opposed to the plan.

Lincoln Katy Trail will include five- and six-story buildings with a “public paseo on Carlisle leading to Katy Trail.”

Womack + Hampton Architects LLC designed the project.

Opponents of the apartments said they objected to the development’s density and the demolition of more affordable housing.

The project is similar to others currently in the works for Uptown and is not the high-rise style of construction increasingly prevalent in the neighborhood.

Lincoln Property is one of Dallas’ oldest and most experienced apartment builders, with thousands of local rental units to its credit.

And Dallas-Fort Worth is the country’s fastest-growing apartment market with more than 50,000 units under construction.
